In 1951, a group of Canadian runners insisted they saw a woman slip into the Boston Marathon before women were allowed to run. She “wore red,” according to the Canadians, but their contention was never proven and thus the controversy moved into legend. Tom Murphy’s novel, also a love story and Irish family drama, offers a search for the mysterious runner “in red.” The book combines with “Barb’s Beer,” named for Barb Murphy, the author’s wife and runner who passed away from non-smoker’s lung cancer in 2013.
