Winter in the UK means plunging temperatures, grey skies, prolonged drizzle and the occasional blizzard. Being able to cope with all this means having the right wardrobe, which in turn means the occasional investment in new items.
As well as serving the practical purpose of allowing us to cope with cold weather, a wardrobe refresh represents a change to reconsider our style. But how exactly might we approach this project?
Refreshing your wardrobe foundation
First, you’ll need to think about the foundational pieces in your wardrobe. Think about what your go-to essentials might be in a given weather situation. It might be that there are staples worth spending big money on. If you lack a quality greatcoat, and you find yourself frequently turning to older, frayed-looking knitwear, then it might be time to make a switch. If you know that you’re going to get years of use from a given investment, it might be easy to justify.
Layering, texture and mixing proportions
Through layering, it’s possible to throw together an outfit that’s fit for any situation. You can mix textures, textiles, vibes and proportions to create something that’s not only practical, but visually interesting. This is often a matter of choosing a number of high-quality, lightweight sweaters that can be mixed and matched. When you know how to do this effectively, you won’t need an extensive collection of clothes that causes major stress when you’re merely glancing through it. What’s more, you’ll have a much easier time in deciding what to wear when you’re on holiday.
Introducing new silhouettes and seasonal highlights
When you’re buying clothes, it can be tempting to stay within your comfort zone and stick with the combinations that work for you. But over time, this might lead to a sense of stagnation. Why not experiment with something new? Whether you’re looking at women’s dresses, midi skirts, overcoats or leather boots, a little tinkering might help to keep things inspiring.
Colour, prints and accessories to elevate your look
Often, we can get great results by adding a splash of colour – and a statement accessory like a hat, scarf, or pair of gloves can be a fantastic way to do this. Keep the basics simple and coherent, and use one or two accessories to add a little bit of visual interest. Don’t be tempted to go overboard – unless you know what you’re doing, less tends to be more.
