If you’re in the mood for a cookout this summer, look no further than the Pridwin Hotel and Cottages on Shelter Island. This luxury waterfront hotel, featuring 49 rooms and 16 private cottages, has been celebrating its weekly Wednesday night barbecues for over 60 years. What began as a local tradition has become a beloved event for adventurous diners from all over the east end. Held on the front lawn of this historic property, the barbecues are a testament to the enduring appeal of the Pridwin.

An Americana Experience

Guests can arrive at the Pridwin by car and ferry from both the North and South Forks, or by boat at one of the property’s two docks. The experience is pure Americana, with a buffet dinner served on tables adorned with red and white gingham tablecloths. These tables dot the front lawn, offering stunning water views that are nothing short of spectacular. With delectable food, breathtaking scenery, and live entertainment, it’s no wonder why the weekly Wednesday barbecues have become a cherished tradition at the Pridwin.

Executive Chef Todd Ruiz crafts a buffet menu with something for everyone in the family. From American fare like burgers, grilled molasses chicken, smoked prime beef brisket, and pulled pork, to seafood options like grilled swordfish, clams, and mussels, the selection is vast. Sides include mac & cheese, hearty salads, and options from the raw bar. For dessert, Executive Pastry Chef Mary Pisanelli presents a work of art featuring an array of confections. Her dessert table includes three kinds of pies, cheesecake, and a tiered silver tray holding homemade peanut butter sandies, oatmeal raisin cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and brownies. A decadent chocolate cake is always in the mix.

Sunset and Entertainment

Catching a sunset on the lawn of the Pridwin is an experience that speaks for itself. Imagine sitting back in one of the white Adirondack chairs, with the orange sky reflecting off the water surrounding Crescent Beach. The smell of barbecue fills the air as you listen to live music—the Loan Sharks performed last week—while bonfires are lit at dusk for roasting marshmallows and making s’mores. Wednesdays at the Pridwin Hotel are the perfect way to start the second half of the week.
