You’ve booked your holiday and the countdown until you go has begun – how exciting! What to do next after you’ve added it to all your calendars and told all your friends and family members? It’s time to get everything else ready.

To start with, you are going to need travel insurance, getting a date to go holiday shopping is a must and you want to ensure your passport isn’t going to expire (can you imagine the disappointment if you couldn’t go because it did). If you are spoiling yourself with this breakaway, organising some extras like the lounge at the airport or a premium transfer is a must.

To help you get ready for your holiday, we have put together our guide on getting yourself ready for your breakaway. Hopefully, this guide will raise the level of excitement as your holiday approaches, and it gives you some tips on getting ready.

Travel Insurance

No matter the type of holiday you are going on, never go without travel insurance. Insurance is a must as it covers you for cancelling or cutting short your trip for something beyond your control, delayed or missed departures for reasons beyond your control as well as medical emergencies, amongst other things. When taking out travel insurance, we would recommend you get multiple quotes as the prices can vary depending on the supplies and the site you run your quote off.

Check Your Passport

As soon as you book your holiday, make sure you check your passport – we’ve heard so many horror stories of people turning up to the airport thinking their passport is in date when in actual fact it isn’t. When checking your passport, it is recommended to make sure you have at least six months on it before it expires (Some countries can turn you away if it doesn’t). Passports can take a month or two to be renewed, so if you want to get your passport replaced as soon as possible.

Organise Extras

Holiday extras are a great way to add a little more luxury and excitement to your breakaway. You can book a lounge at the airport, where your food and drink is included. If you are flying, you can upgrade to first class or business class and why not add a bottle of bubbly to your hotel booking for when you arrive? If you have booked your trip away with a travel agent, you can ask them what extras they offer, if there are some additional ones you want to add on top of our suggestions.

Book Your Transfer

Depending on how far your hotel is from the airport, you may need to organise an airport transfer. The sooner you do this, the better the price will be and just like your insurance, it’s always worth running multiple quotes to get the best price. Why not treat yourself to a premium upgrade if you are looking to add a little extra to your holiday? You’ll feel very posh, arriving at your hotel in a Mercedes, BMW, Audi or Bentley if you go for the biggest upgrade. If you are bringing your children with you, an upgrade on your airport transfer is something they can look forward to and ensure they have fun on the trip.

Plan Your Luggage

Rules have changed with luggage when you fly. In the past, it was all included, but now you have to pay extra to add your luggage to your flight. Depending on the airline will depend on how much you have to pay extra and the amount of weight you can bring with you. By purchasing luggage before you fly, you will often save money as they offer discounts. Airlines will charge you if you go over your weight allowance, so try to weigh it before you go. It’s also worth noting that hand luggage is also charged for now, so don’t forget to add that to your booking if you are going to bring a small suitcase with you.

We hope you have a fantastic holiday and the above tips help you get prepared. The sooner you get prepared, the less stressful the leadup can be. It also means any additional costs can be paid far in advance as companies tend to charge upfront for extras or luggage.

What tips would you suggest to someone getting ready for their breakaway? Which of the above suggestions did you find most useful? Is there anything missing that you think we should include? Let us know in the comment box below, we would love to hear from you.
