When TikTok merged with Musical.ly in August 2018, the platform soared through the rankings of social media platforms. Initially, and still at the very core of it.
With the acquisition of Musical.ly, a platform where users created and shared lip-sync videos, it took over the US teenage market, spreading worldwide. With that, TikTok transformed the landscape of social media, where music is incorporated into almost every video. Musicians adore the platform and put maximum effort into TikTok promotion, getting views, and making their music viral.
Fast forward to today, TikTok has developed into a spot where many artists thrive. Many musicians have made a strong career for themselves by blowing up on TikTok, including Lil Nas X, Doja Cat, Jack Harlow, and others.
Billboard is an American music and entertainment magazine that offers comprehensive coverage of the global music industry and its diverse facts. Founded in 1894, it has become the industry’s most reputable source of news. Along with its news, it provides music charts, reviews, opinions, videos, events, and all sorts of related coverage. As an artist, a mark on one of Billboard’s charts means a mark of success.
TikTok Billboard Top 50 Chart: The Destined Partnership
On September 14th, 2023, TikTok and Billboard joined forces to launch the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart, a new weekly tally chart that ranks the most popular songs on TikTok in the United States. Available to all users on TikTok, Billboard and in the US, the rankings on the charts will be determined by several factors including video views, total user engagement, as well as the number of other creations that include the song.
Before this merger, TikTok was already one of the most powerful outlets for music discovery as well as promotion. With what came out of it, it was already driving many songs and artists onto the Billboard charts. It only made sense for the two companies to work together and come up with the TikTok Billboard Top 50 Chart.
After its launch, Sexxy Red claimed the first number 1 spot on these charts with her song SkeeYee. Following this position was Doja Cat with her song, Paint the Town Red and at number 3, Taylor Swift with her song, August. Although the listed songs have already been ranked as the top songs, these charts allow for even further discoverability and can push the peaks of any song’s success.
